Fellowship literally means “association with being” and has a time-honoured tradition as a teaching method. It is an assembly of good company that fosters fellowship in truth. A fellowship invokes recognition of one’s true nature. It imparts noble teachings through wisdom either via silence or by words. A fellowship helps to remove worldliness and calms the mind. This method of communion is considered very suitable for the seeker to develop clear and discriminative understanding.
Our Global Sangha
Fellowship as a Nonprofit Service
A fellowship brings about a direct experience of divinity. Meditation, wellness and spiritual lifestyle help define the path of inquiry. Fellowships form the core method of disseminating and sharing the precious teachings. Much of the Sanskrit literature lives on as a universal heritage for humankind with great relevance to modern society, easily integrating faith and evolution and as a bridge between science and spirituality. Our Nonprofit was founded to establish a legacy in the West by harnessing the wisdom of ancient meditation lineages, to restore Sanskrit spiritual wealth and make it more accessible.
A worldwide community of seekers participates in the Nonprofit’s fellowships to the public. Invited lectures, peace chants and discourses, livestream fellowships, workshops on wellness and breathing (prānāyāma), meditation retreats, healing prayer services or peace masses, initiations into Himalayan meditation, and authentic Vedic fire ceremonies (homa) are all well attended by the public. In Southern California, where the Nonprofit has its headquarters, the regular fellowships and meditation services are led by His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda.
Fellowship Tutelage
The name Hansavedas Fellowship defines the fellowship service that shares the holistic curriculum of wisdom teachings and meditation practices from the Himalayan tradition of Hansavedas Mațha (often spelled as mutt). Like any other mațha upholding the Sanskrit monastic heritage, Hansavedas Mațha has a profound time-honoured curriculum (gurukulam) guided by erudite Vedic monks who are themselves meditation adepts. The saintly monks oversee the well-structured Hansavedas curriculum that is implemented using ancient Sanskrit guidelines (canon). The curriculum is based on what is already established and ongoing at several sister institutions in India run by the monks of the monastic council.
The monks who study historical Sanskrit literature are seamless in their scholarly and meditative interpretation of cardinal Sanskrit philosophies, such as Vedanta, Samkhya and Yoga. What is taught has thus not only retained a sound philosophical basis grounded in a time-tested Vedic system of learning, but is also based on a living practice as part of the unbroken Himalayan adepts tradition. While most of these institutions (mațha) are located in northern India, including Himalaya (Shivalik mountains), their operations are headquartered in Varanasi, where four properties have an ongoing established curriculum of training, learning and meditating.
The Western mission of this consortium disseminates these teachings through the Nonprofit, Self Enquiry Life Fellowship. The Hansavedas Mission brings to the Nonprofit a vast repository of Vedic wisdom based on the Sanskrit texts. The authenticity of the teachings is safeguarded by the entire team of Vedic monks serving the mission. They hail from among the most ancient unbroken monastic lineages still surviving today. Therefore the dissemination of extant literature, meditative arts and historical archives is duly inspired by their meditative insights.
Impact of Transmission
The nonprofit organization Self Enquiry Life Fellowship has made a profound impact through its regular services and curriculum of public lectures, fellowships, workshops and retreats. The Nonprofit has offered on average more than two public events (primarily free of charge) per month since its inception, in addition to its livestream fellowships and volunteer training sessions. Many of the participants at public events come from low and moderate income families (LMI) and they cannot afford to pay exorbitant fees to receive this kind of high quality spiritual service. In order to keep the forum accessible to all, including students, the public discourses, guided meditations and spiritual advice are made available by the Nonprofit primarily free of cost.
Free naivedyam (consecrated food), herbal tea or Ayurvedic snacks are usually offered at our public events and further demonstrate our model of compassion. Participants come from all walks of life and from diverse socio-economic backgrounds: from fresh college graduates to art, yoga and dance instructors, farmers, householders, small business owners, retired seniors, professors and professionals who serve the fabric of our modern society. All are treated equally in the spirit of fairness inherent in our inclusive platform. All are included in our meditation services.
There have been a number of events for beginners on breathwork, mindfulness and wellness leading to carefully structured programmes on mindful living. Our annual meditation retreats attract ardent meditators who immensely value a structured daily practice. In addition we offer at least one family friendly retreat per year where children are welcome to accompany parents in a spiritual retreat environment to experience holistic training and value-based learning.
Our regular monthly livestream teachings train an international audience on the meaning of ancient Sanskrit verses and aphorisms of spiritual philosophy, how to implement the teaching in daily life and live the values associated with the high thinking contained in the scriptural tenets. These livestreams are watched worldwide by seekers, friends and families from their homes as well as at centres of congregation.
Most of the fellowship services, mass prayers for healing, and the guided meditation are recorded live. These recordings are an invaluable repository of indigenous knowledge interpreted into English. This growing library is made available through a digital learning platform at hansavedas.academy. Our publications that are physical productions such as books, booklets, workbooks, sacred art or vintage photo prints are available at bookstore.hansavedas.org. To fructify the mission of exchange and sharing, several books are in the pipeline to augment the online learning curriculum.
The Fellowship Archives currently house hundreds of antique prints and over one thousand digital vintage images related to the Sanskrit lore, many of which are repaired or cleaned, re-mastered or re-authoured before release for purchase at our website or through our annual auction. The Nonprofit continues to expand the archive collection with the idea of sharing these Sanskriti treasures. The process of digitizing and preserving these art pieces and artefacts continues and as part of the work, interns, volunteers and staff receive training in cataloguing, research and preservation. Looking ahead, a database of royalty-free and rights-managed images is in the early planning stage for online public access through our website.
Services in Addition to Regular Fellowships
Self Enquiry Life Fellowship carries in its name the main service forum of the organization. Fellowships are the life and heart of our service. A fellowship is the central platform where seekers gather together to receive and absorb the sublime teachings of spiritual philosophy, contemplate and meditate.
Below is a brief description of the four types of fellowships that our Nonprofit offers as special outreach to the community in addition to the regular fellowships that are held as ongoing services. Our monthly livestreams and full moon fellowships are examples of regular fellowships. However, a special outreach of the following four types may coincide with such occasions.
Institutional Fellowships
Public discourses in which an institution such as a university, church, temple, college, hospital, etc. formally invites our monks to deliver a message or a lecture. The theme and subject of these fellowships are tailored to the particular audience and institutional focus.
Community Fellowships
Public services organized by a group of volunteers from within a specific community. The theme of the discourses tends to be broad for a diverse audience and is a special message to the community. Workshops and some retreats also fall under this category.
Memorial Fellowships
Fellowships centred around a special occasion or auspicious date of the Vedic soli-lunar calendar. Often times these fellowships will consist of not only a thematically relevant discourse offered by His Holiness, but also a ceremonial function or a Vedic fire ceremony. Two examples of Memorial Fellowships include our annual events: Guru Purnimā during the Hansacharaṇam fellowship and Krishna-janmāṣtami during the Hansajanman fellowship. The ambience at these programmes can range from deeply meditative to a more celebratory atmosphere.
Home Fellowships
Fellowships hosted by a single family or jointly sponsored by a few families in their home. Attendees are personally invited by the host family and often supplemented by the Nonprofit’s own outreach. In order to honour the privacy of the inviting family, these fellowship services are not publicly advertised even though new members of the public attend through invitation. Home Fellowships offer the opportunity for the monks to expand on a single scriptural theme and go more deeply into the philosophical nuances.

The following list is a selection of the public lectures hosted by institutions who invited His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda to their institutional premises for a discourse.
Apart from such events through institutional invitations, several other public events are held under the auspices of the nonprofit organization, Self Enquiry Life Fellowship, to disseminate Sanskrit-based indigenous knowledge and Vedic wisdom. These public fellowships, whereby community volunteers arrange discourses by His Holiness and/or fine-arts performances by classical artists, are not listed here.
